Obituary

Virgie Ann Smith, 79, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday July 25, 2020 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law Ben and Dawn Smith of Monroe, NC. Virgie was born in Blue Mountain, Mississippi on March 29, 1941 the only child of Leonard and Alice Jewel Goodman. While still a young child, they moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi where she grew up. She met her husband of 50 years, Elijah Alexander Smith (Smitty to her, Al to everyone else) when he was stationed at Keesler Airforce Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Virgie and Al raised their family in Charlotte, NC and spent their latter years together in West End, NC. Virgie was best known for her outgoing personality. She never met a stranger. She helped so many who struggled with sobriety and was always there for anyone who needed help. On June 6, 2020, she celebrated 34 years of recovery, which was what she was most thankful for in life. Virgie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Al Smith. She is survived by her son Ben Smith and his wife Dawn, her daughter Sherry Smith Mullis and her husband Frank, as well as her grandchildren Sarah Ross (Matt), Lydia Loffer (Caleb), Alex Smith (Elizabeth), Carla Mullis, and Steven Mullis as well as her great-grandchildren, Easton, Liam, Remi and Rhys. Due to the COVID virus, a private family graveside memorial service will be held at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church. We appreciate those of you who would be there if circumstances were different during this time. Thank you to each of you who will be there with us in spirit, thoughts and prayers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Virgie's memory to https://saharasproject.com (see "Donate" at the bottom of their webpage) or a charity of your choice. Sahara's Project is a Christian organization that helps families with special needs children cover the expenses of physical and occupational therapy. A ministry very close to our hearts. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and love to Michelle Parrott, sister of Dawn Smith, for her wonderful and faithful care of Virgie during the last years of her life
