Thomas McNeil Wallace, age 90, departed this life on September 22, 2016. Thomas was born in Brunson, SC to Mary Heath Wallace. Mr. Wallace was a Belmont Abbey College football player before enlisting to serve his Country. Mr. Wallace lived in Charlotte, NC for many years. Thomas " Neil " began amateur boxing with " Heavy Hands " winning 11 amateur bouts all by knock-out. In 1948 Neil won�the Carolina Golden Gloves and in the same year became a Professional Boxer. Neil rose quickly through the ranks. In 1949, Ring Magazine listed Neil Wallace among upcoming heavyweight prospects including Rocky Marciano. The next year Neil was on the under card of the World Heavyweight Title fight between Joe Louis and Ezzard Charles. The Event was held at Yankee Stadium and was televised on CBS, September 27, 1950. Mr. Wallace returned to Charlotte, NC that year to care for his ailing mother.� He became a Charlotte Police Officer. In 1952, Neil started fighting in the Charlotte area leading up to two well-known�brutal bouts with Waban Thomas in 1957. The highly anticipated rematch at the Charlotte Coliseum featured the former Heavyweight Champion Rocky Marciano as Referee.�20 years later�on December 13, 1977 Neil Wallace boxed Waban Thomas one last time at the Charlotte Coliseum. Both Fighters were 52. They later became lifelong friends. "Neil" Wallace was inducted into the Carolina's Boxing Hall of Fame on April 21, 1989. A memorial service to honor Thomas McNeil Wallace will be held on October 8, 2016 at Ellington Funeral Service in Charlotte, NC at 5:00 PM.� A visitation will follow after the service.
