Obituary

Sandra "Sandy" Stewart Nemer passed away on Monday, September 14, 2020 at the age of 72 surrounded by her family at Hospice House of Union County. Sandy is survived by her children, Tracy Nemer and Kelly (Steven) Stegall; two grandchildren, Levy and Magdalena "Lena" Stegall; a brother, Bill (Sharon) Stewart; a sister, Barbara (Rod) Kuly; and five nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred "Ken" Nemer, II; her parents; a twin sister, Charlotte Stewart; and her beloved grandmother, Ethel Seymour. Sandy was born in Monroe, North Carolina on October 26, 1947 to Marshall "Ben" and Joy Stewart. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1966 and attended East Carolina University. Sandy and Ken married on August 20, 1967 at the First Baptist Church in Monroe. They were married for almost 50 years when Ken passed away in 2017. Sandy spent her career as a staunch advocate for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As the founding Executive Director of the ARC of Union County, Sandy worked tirelessly for almost thirty years to secure supports and services for individuals and families in need. She was fierce in her advocacy efforts at a time when people with disabilities were not afforded equal access to education, employment, and support services. In her free time, Sandy enjoyed gardening, reading, and especially entertaining. The Nemer home was often filled to the brim with family, friends, laughter, and amazing food. Sandy had a knack for making all feel welcomed and loved. In her later years, Sandy spent a significant amount of time with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she dearly adored. The family will hold a private burial service that will be streamed online for public viewing. A link to the service will be available on the Holland Funeral Service & Crematory Facebook page. The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Union County for the care they provided to Sandy during her final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the South Piedmont Community College Foundation in support of the Compass Education Program, a program that assists adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities transitioning to employment and/or higher education opportunities.
