Obituary

Ruby Jean Turner

May 19, 1944 – January 18, 2026

Ruby Jean Turner, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful servant of God, entered eternal rest on January 18, 2026, in Monroe, North Carolina. She was born on May 19, 1944, in Niagara Falls, New York, to the late William Ervin and Pearl Turner.

Ruby was a joyful and dedicated presence in the lives of all who knew her. Her life reflected unwavering faith, service, and love. She was a devoted member of St. John African American Methodist Episcopal Church in Niagara Falls, New York, under the leadership of Pastor Makeeda Brooks. Ruby served faithfully as an officer and member of the Lay Organization, a dedicated member of the Stewardess Board, and an active participant in the Missionary Society. With great passion and commitment, she led the Shoe Rally Ministry, ensuring that her service honored God and uplifted others.

Ruby was preceded in death by her brothers, Isaiah Turner and Curtis Chatmon; her daughter, Denise Sawyer-Winkfield; and her son-in-law, David Winkfield.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving son, Arthur (Jontae) Scott of Matthews, North Carolina; her grandchildren, Charmaine (Reggie) Sawyer, Michael (Shawnquilla) Sawyer, Jasmine Winkfield, DeKayla Perkins, Zonaysia Fields, Marissa Scott, Zakari Scott, Ricco Brown II, Arthur Scott IV, and Jaelle Scott; and her great-grandchildren, JahZeara Carter, Malayah Sawyer, Jashiya Brinson, Julianna Hall, and Michael Sawyer Jr. She also leaves a host of relatives, church family, and dear friends who were blessed by her life.

Ruby found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved cooking for her family, playing dominos, listening to music, and spending cherished time with her beloved “Golden Girls.” Her laughter, wisdom, and nurturing spirit filled every room she entered.

Though she will be deeply missed, Ruby Jean Turner’s legacy of faith, service, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. We rejoice knowing she has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
