Obituary

Phil Ellis Howell, born on May 21, 1944, in Williamston, North Carolina, passed away on January 14, 2026. A devoted preacher and passionate musician, Phil dedicated his life to sharing the Gospel and uplifting those around him. His ministry included significant roles as pastor at Beacon Baptist Church in Lancaster, South Carolina, and Tabernacle Baptist Church in Wadesboro, North Carolina, along with many opportunities to fill in preaching wherever needed.

Phil attended Love Baptist Church in Monroe, North Carolina, where his commitment to faith and community flourished. He was an avid musician, known for his remarkable skills on several instruments, particularly the banjo and guitar. As a member of the music group "The Southerns," Phil spread joy through his music, reflecting his deep love for the Lord and his commitment to spreading the Gospel.

In addition to his ministry and love for music, Phil retired from Vanguard in Monroe, NC, where he contributed to the workforce with the same dedication and integrity he exhibited in his personal life. Phil cherished his family deeply; they were his pride and joy, and his love for them was unmatched.

Phil is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn Howell, his daughters, Phyllis Crenshaw (Tony) and Becky Harper (Tim), his son, Paul Howell, and stepchildren, Butch Rape (Christy) and Stephen Rape (Melissa). He was also the proud grandfather of Matthew Wilson and Joshua Rhyner, and his stepson-in-law, Tim Jordan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Oscar Howell and Mary Frances Norris Howell, first wife, Vernell Howell, brothers Ray Howell and Coy Howell, sister, Allie Mae Scott (David), and stepdaughter, Lisa Jordan.

Phil's contributions to his community, ministry, and family will be cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him.

A graveside service to honor his life and legacy will be held on January 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Bible Baptist Tabernacle located at 2900 Walkup Ave, Monroe, North Carolina.
