IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ms. Violet Mcwhorter
Starnes
November 30, 1926 – November 5, 2022
Monroe, NC - Violet McWhorter Starnes, age 95, passed away peacefully November 5, 2022. She was born November 30, 1926, in Waxhaw, NC the daughter of the late George Washington McWhorter and Delphia Starnes McWhorter.
A few weeks shy of 96, Violet was born to a large family during the roaring twenties. Since she grew up during the Great Depression, she would often tell stories of simpler times where there were no cell phones, central air/heat or cars, and hard work was easy to find in the cotton fields. When World War II hit, Violet did her part to serve our country and worked in the artillery factory in downtown Charlotte making bullets for our soldiers.
After Violet married Warren H. Starnes in 1946, her life was solely dedicated to the well-being of her family. A wonderful wife and loving mother, Violet eventually entered into the role she was born to be…a grandma. Known as "Granny" to everyone for the last 48 years, she was a constant prayer warrior, the biggest cheerleader, and had the uncanny ability to make every single one of the grandkids feel like they were her favorite.
A faithful member of Sandy Ridge Baptist Church for over 75 years, Violet was a member of the Prayer Group, JOY Group and served in WMU. She used her spiritual gifts to glorify the Lord and was an attentive caregiver to many family members well into her 90's.
Granny loved the Lord, and her surviving family rejoices knowing she is reunited with her husband, two of her four children, and many other loved family members. There is great comfort in knowing she is Home with Jesus and that we will see her again.
Mrs. Starnes is survived by two of her children, Joyce Haynes (Jerome) of Monroe, NC, and Jack Starnes (Renee) of Monroe, NC, daughter-in-law, Avanda Starnes of Monroe, NC; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Starnes, Heather Brown (John), Justin Starnes (Lindsay), Jessica Edwards (Nate), Jason Starnes (Jessie), Melissa Haynes, and Jonathan Haynes; thirteen great-grandchildren, Porter, Carter, Owen, Conner, Jackilyn, Bucky, Kayleigh, Brycen, Hayden, Austin, Emily, Hallie Kate and Abbie; and a large extended family.
Mrs. Starnes was preceded in death by her husband, Warren H. Starnes; two children Wanda Starnes and Donald Starnes, her parents, and her siblings, Mildred Starnes, Lorene Starnes, Betty Medlin, Ray and Roy McWhorter and Wilson McWhorter.
The Homegoing Service for Mrs. Starnes will be at 2:30 pm Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at Sandy Ridge Baptist Church 1120 W. Sandy Ridge Road, Monroe, North Carolina 28112 officiated by Rev. Eddie Powers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
