Obituary

Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Freeman Hill, died at age 92 on March 7, 2025, and was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Addison Leavens Hill. She was born in Rutherford County, the daughter of the late Boyce and Estelle Hall Freeman. She

was a descendant of longtime pioneers in Western North Carolina namely Hall, Dalton, Lakey, Freeman and Huntley. Betty was a graduate of Mission Hospital School of Nursing and had been an active member of the Mission Belles Alumni. Most of her career was spent working in surgery in various hospitals in North Carolina. For a number of years, she volunteered with the Red Cross Bloodmobile. She and her late husband, Addison, whom she met while a student nurse at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., retired to Black Mountain in 1997 on land which had been in her family for over 100 years. A charter member of Greensboro St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, she has been active in many churches in North Carolina, always singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School and serving as an Elder and officer in Presbyterian Women. She was awarded an Honorary

Life Membership in Presbyterian Women in 2007 at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church. For many years she was a regular volunteer at Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries. Betty was an avid gardener, achieving the Master Gardener designation while living in Greensboro, and took great pride in growing iris and peonies inherited from her parents.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 22 at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church in Black Mountain, North Carolina, at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Immediately following the service there will be a reception for the family to receive friends.

Survivors include Jennifer and husband Richard Carothers of Lawrenceville, Georgia; Leslie and husband Keith Hall of Monroe, North Carolina; Eleanor and husband Danny Howard of Ooltewah, Tennessee. She was predeceased by sisters Margaret Anderson of Asheville, North Carolina, and JoAnn Surratt of Bessemer, North Carolina. Betty had six grandchildren, Ashley Berrie and Olivia Kirk, Lindsay Duffy and Sydney Wood, and Addison and Sophie Howard. She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Ethan and Jackson Berrie, Lily Duffy, and Cash and Georgia Wood.

Memorial gifts may be made to Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries, Mission Belles Scholarship Endowment Fund, or the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund.
