Obituary

Hong Jeong, 77, passed away peacefully October 4, 2022 after a long battle with kidney disease. She was born Chun Hyang Hong in South Korea on September 10, 1945, to the late Yong Taek Hong and Chun Sam Pak. It was in Seoul, South Korea that she met Robert Thomas Scanlon, who was stationed there while serving in the United States Army. They married in 1969 and began their life in The Bronx, New York having children Jeanne Marie in 1970 and Robert Thomas Jr. in 1971. They later relocated to Long Island settling in Shirley, New York where they had their third child, Adam Christopher Scanlon on August 11, 1974. Adam Christopher preceded her in death as an infant on her birthday, September 10, 1974. Followed by this devastating loss and although she loved her family deeply, Hong was a free spirit who needed to go on her own journey. She and Robert divorced in 1976 with Hong returning to The Bronx to chart her own course. Fearless and relentlessly hard-working, Hong went on to start a few businesses, marrying and divorcing a second time; thereafter remaining an outspoken, fiercely independent woman the rest of her days. One of the things Hong was most proud of was earning her citizenship in the United States of America. She loved her adopted country and enjoyed traveling the U.S.A. to see its wonders throughout her life. Hong remained a committed mother to Jeanne Marie and Robert Thomas Jr. and then grandmother to Lillian Hong in 1993 and Justice Adam Gerard in 1999. She cherished her family and proudly surrounded herself at home with family photos. Hong was blessed with friendships many decades long and was deeply devoted and rooted in her relationship with God.

Hong will always be remembered for being the bold little firecracker she was. Though tiny in stature, Hong was absolutely fearless with a larger than life personality. She was also an exceptional cook proudly preparing the most delicious Korean meals for her family and friends.

Hong is survived by daughter, Jeanne Marie Scarlett (nee Scanlon) and her husband, John L. Scarlett, son, Robert Thomas Scanlon Jr. and his wife, Jennifer Leckstrom, father of her children, Robert Thomas Scanlon, granddaughter, Lillian Hong East (nee Montalvo) and her husband, Michael East and grandson, Justice Adam Gerard Montalvo and his fiancee, Emma Weeks.

The family of Hong Jeong expresses their deepest gratitude to Hospice of Union County and St. John Lee (Korean) Catholic Church for the great comfort, respect, care and compassion shown to her in her final days.
