Hattie Mae Mullis Starnes, age 100 gained her angel wings on Sunday, February 2, 2025. She had spent 5 days at hospice and a couple of weeks in the hospital.

Mrs. Starnes is survived by her daughter, Dolly S Tyson (Aaron), two grandchildren, Darin Tyson, and Katie Robinson (Ben) and five great grandchildren (Reece, Owen, Averie, Braxton and Berkley). She is blessed to also have a niece Brenda Young (John), nephew Avery Haigler, and nephew Joe Neil Price (Carolyn) in her life. She cherished them and loved it when they visited her.

Mrs. Starnes was the 12th of 13 children born to the late Lillie and Jonah Mullis. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings. She was the care giver to her mother and her father before their deaths. She was also preceded in death by her husband, J.R. Starnes 34 years ago. She missed him greatly and was proud of the life they built together.

Mrs. Starnes was an excellent cook, seamstress, and gardener. She worked for various department stores over her career. She bought her first car before she ever learned to drive. She was brilliant and always willing and able to help out. Her grandchildren were her greatest joys and she taught them many things. She made many beautiful quilts, afghans and crocheted toys, baby outfits, tablecloths and dishcloths. She loved flowers, birds and growing veggies in her garden.

Mrs. Starnes was a member of Bethlehem Church and the Busy Bees Circle. She served quietly and humbly and will be greatly missed!

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday February 5, 2025 at 3:00pm at Bethlehem United Methodist Church located at 5300 Nesbit Road, Waxhaw, NC 28173. Ms. Starnes will be laid to rest following the service at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held prior to services from 2:00pm to 3:00pm.
