IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ms. Della Gervis
Funderburk
September 15, 1915 – August 22, 2023
Ms. Della Gervis Funderburk, affectionately known as "MawMaw" and "Aunt Dot" was born September 15, 1915, and departed this life on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at the age of 107. She was born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina to the late John and Angeline Watts Funderburk. She was educated in the Chesterfield County Schools. At an early age she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Flint Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, Pageland South Carolina. Flint Ridge was founded and pastored by her great uncle Herod Funderburk. She maintained church membership throughout her life and returned to her home church Flint Ridge Baptist in her later years. She loved the Lord and held on to her faith in the Good Master! She understood the importance of a strong work ethic and she instilled that in her children and grandchildren. She worked jobs that required physical labor, but that never deterred her. Her objective was to take care of her family and she did that very well. Whatever she set her mind to accomplish, she made it happen. Simply speaking, she was "A Jack of All Trades". MawMaw was always kind, caring and had a big heart. She would always welcome you into her home and ensure that you were fed. She was a lady of few words, if she didn't have anything nice to say, she wouldn't say anything at all. She never spoke negatively about anyone. Her favorite saying was, "I Love You"! MawMaw had several hobbies. She knitted, crocheted, played checkers and framed beautiful puzzles after putting them together. Gardening was always important to her. She enjoyed planting, growing and canning her own vegetables. She milked her cow and churned her butter. She also raised her own pigs and chickens for many years. She built her own smokehouse to cure the meat. The most wonderful thing about all this was her willingness to share with family and friends! MawMaw was very athletic, she enjoyed playing games with the children in the yard. Earlier in her life she became an avid golfer winning many tournaments with trophies as evidence. Fishing was major for her and her siblings. Whether deep sea or at a local pond she could fish all day and never get tired. MawMaw enjoyed getting all dolled up and competing in church fashion shows and other locations alongside her sister Eva. They could really "walk" the runway. To know her was to love her! She enjoyed life to the fullest and her loved ones helped make it all possible. She was always delighted when her daughters, grands, nieces and nephews came to visit. We will forever cherish her love, generosity, kindness, laughter and smile. MawMaw was the last of a generation. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Angeline Watts Funderburk; her daughter, Evelyn F. Stevenson; her son Mitchell D. Funderburk; grandson, Donnie R. Stevenson; great-grandson, Michael Stevenson and great-great grandson, Matthew Wilson-Starnes; great-granddaughter, Sherika Stevenson; four brothers; Tommy, James, Carwell and Johnny Funderburk; nine sisters; Emmie F. Sworpshire, Minnie F. Robinson, Bessie F. Simpson, Pearline F. Stokes, Mary F. Alsobrooks, Martha F. Dunn, Lessie F. Booze, Ollie F. Gray, and Eva F. Richardson and many other relatives and friends. MawMaw leaves to cherish long and everlasting memories her two daughters; Willette F. Hough, Katrina W. Robeson; Ten grandchildren; Thirty-two great-grandchildren, forty great-great-grandchildren, six great-great-great grandchildren, a special care giver, Sherrod Person, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special Friend, Mr. Bennie Blakely Jr., who always called her "My Girl" and gave her beautiful flowers while she was here.
