Obituary

JoAnna Carol (Lamphier) Hewett, 52, of Lancaster, SC, departed this life and entered into Heaven on March 7, 2024. Born in Charlotte, NC on January 30, 1972, JoAnna was the youngest of four children and grew up in nearby Indian Land, SC. JoAnna attended East Mecklenburg High School and Indian Land High School. JoAnna was a multi-talented office manager and worked in a variety of industries over the years, including ShoreRock Group, The Precision Alliance, and Sky HVAC.

When JoAnna wasn't at work, she was most likely in her kitchen whipping up her latest fabulous concoction, causing her brother David to give her the nickname MarthaRayDeen. In addition to posting recipes on her blogspot, MarthaRayDeen.blogspot.com, she was also featured under that name on JustAPinch.com, with 33 recipes and 7 blue ribbon awards.

JoAnna is survived by her husband Joe Velten and daughter Adrian Hewett, both of Lancaster, SC; stepdaughter Karly Velten (Joseph) of Winston-Salem, NC; stepson Tanner (Jennifer) Velten of Apex, NC; stepson Ryan Velten of Schofield Army Base, Oahu, HI; mother Carol Norris (Jeff) of Vero Beach, FL; father Ken (Vicki) Patterson of Knoxville, TN; sister Michele (Tim) Gordon of Indian Trail, NC; brother David (April) Brewer of Indian Land, SC; sister Kathy (Scott) Jeffreys of Statesville, NC; father and mother-in-law, Terry and Jody Velten of Arlington, KS; sister-in-law Eve Marie Leis of Wichita, KS; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews; and many other family members, both related, and those of the heart. She is preceded in death by her son, Justin Rockwell Hewett, and her biological father, Mark Lamphier.

JoAnna cherished her role as a wife and mother, always putting her family's needs before her own. She had two children, a daughter Adrian, and a son, Justin, with her first husband, Ken Hewett. Justin was born with a heart defect and lived a short seven weeks before going to Heaven in early 1994. We know JoAnna is rejoicing to see her baby boy again at last.

In July of 2018, JoAnna married the love of her life, Joe Velten, after nearly 15 years together. During their time together, Joe supported JoAnna in all of her favorite things, which aside from her family were growing flowers, cooking, entertaining, spoiling pets, and rescuing animals (especially kittens).

JoAnna packed so much life into her 52 years and this world has lost an amazing person. Her attributes were many: generous, loving, beautiful inside and out, brilliant, funny, strong, caring, selfless, warm, nurturing, non-judgmental, and so much more, but her deep love for others, especially those who were hurting or less fortunate, may have been her greatest gift. JoAnna felt others' pain almost as if it were her own, and this led her to show up with food, hugs, kisses, and words of love, in spite of whatever she may have been dealing with herself. She was the queen of late night chats, the time when people most often need a compassionate ear.

JoAnna's many friends, colleagues, and family members were graced with her attention, her gifts, her wonderful cooking, and her love. She was the life of the party (even when there was no party), constantly keeping us laughing, and forever feeding us and bringing us gifts. There are so many wonderful "JoAnna" stories that we will be able to hold onto and share with joy and laughter for years to come.

Her departure comes as a great shock and the family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in her honor on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Harmony Baptist Church, 5403 Harmony Church Rd, Edgemoor, SC 29712. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00pm, with the service following at 2:00pm.

Remembrances may be made in the form of contributions to JoAnna's favorite charitable organization: Lancaster County Animal Shelter, Animal Rescue division https://www.lancastersheltersc.com/
