Obituary

Eloise Broadwell Milliken passed away peacefully on December 16, 2024, at the age of 91.

Born on November 4, 1933, in Pendleton, South Carolina, Eloise was the daughter of Lee and Frances Mary Broadwell. She graduated from Pendleton High School and continued her education at Anderson University before earning a degree in music education from Winthrop University.

In 1959, Eloise moved to Monroe, North Carolina, with her sister, Doris. She began her teaching career as a music teacher at John D. Hodges Elementary School and East Elementary School and served as a chorus director at Walter Bickett High School. She became a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church in Monroe, where she met her late husband, John Milliken, through the church choir. They shared a love of music, sang together for many years, and enjoyed 55 years of marriage.

Eloise's life was deeply intertwined with music. Blessed with a natural gift, she could play the piano and organ by ear from a young age. She shared her talent generously, playing for her family, the First Baptist Church in Pendleton, and later as organist and choir director at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. Over the years, she accompanied a men's quartet, children's choirs, men's Bible classes, and countless family gatherings. Even in her later years, her musical ability remained strong, and she continued to play beautifully without sheet music.

Eloise was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church. Beyond her contributions to the church's music programs, she taught kindergarten and preschool, served on numerous committees, and was recognized with the Honorary Life Membership Award for her unwavering service.

In addition to her church involvement, Eloise sang with the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte and found joy in gardening, traveling with close friends, and spending time with her beloved family. She will be remembered for her kind spirit, warm smile, and quick wit.

Eloise was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Frances Mary Broadwell; her brothers, Wallace and Wilton Broadwell; her sisters, Aileen Hooper, Mary Mitchell, and Sara Strickland; and her husband, John Milliken. She is survived by her children, Lee (Dave) Hutchinson and Jesse (Denise) Milliken; her grandchildren, Nick, Jake, and Evan Hutchinson, and Lexy and Ashley Milliken; and her sister, Doris English.

Eloise's life was a testament to her faith, her love of music, and her devotion to her family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family will hold a memorial service to celebrate Eloise's life at 2 o'clock on Friday, January 3rd, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church of Monroe. A visitation will follow in the fellowship hall.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, 302 E. Windsor Street, Monroe NC 28112.
