Obituary

Donna Goodwin, 79, of Indian Trail, passed away Christmas morning. She is the daughter of the late Majorie Laney Bernabe and Bernardo Salvador Bernabe and sister to the late Bernardo Salvador Bernabe Jr.

Donna lived in Union County until 1999, when she moved to the place, she truly called home in Trade, Tennessee. Donna was the former wife of the late Carl Douglas Helms, with whom she shared two children and five grandchildren, and the wife of the late Frankie Lee Goodwin.

Funeral Services will be held from the graveside 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 2, 2024 in the Siler Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Donna was a devoted mother, loving wife, and cherished "Meemaw." She was a proud member of Queen City Corvette Club and shared her enthusiasm for cars with her daughter and oldest grandson. Donna spent time in her garden planting and growing whatever, she pleased. She spent most of her time in the kitchen canning vegetables for friends, family, and neighbors. She gifted beautiful, cross-stitched pictures and blankets and filled her home and yard with colorful flowers for all to enjoy.

Donna was known for her fiery spirit and unabated sass. Her quips and (mildly inappropriate) sense of humor is what her family will remember most about her as well as the fierce love she wrapped around them. She was a thoughtful, giving person. Her mountain home was open to anyone and everyone, and her kitchen held an endless abundance of the best food known to man. She filled hearts and bellies with her gracious hospitality. Donna is now reunited with her parents, brother, husband, and beloved boxer babies: Odie-Podie, Max, and Gussy.

Donna is the mother of Kevin Douglas Helms and Jatana Lanette Helms. She is grandmother to Kristy Helms Lowery and Madison Helms Grenke and Mikayla, Noah, and Eli Marlow. She is great-grandmother to Mykie Lowery. Donna is stepmother to Mark Goodwin and Jennifer Goodwin Wiktorek.

A graveside service will be held in honor of Donna's life and memory. The date and details of the service will be announced once finalized by Holland Funeral Service. Flowers may be sent to Holland Funeral Home in Monroe.
