Mr. William Cooper
Hillhouse
February 20, 1930 – July 31, 2024
William Cooper Hillhouse, 94, loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away July 31, 2024. He was born February 20, 1930, in Rutherford, NJ a son to the late Mildred Cooper Hillhouse and William Hillhouse, Jr. He is also preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Hillhouse.
Mr. Hillhouse graduated from Rutherford High School Class of 1947 and Alleghany College in 1952. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, 1952 -1954. He also served at the Pentagon. He was partner in ownership of the family lumber yard, Cooper Lumber Company in East Rutherford, NJ. He was a resident of Wayne, NJ for over 41 years where he was a member of Wayne Presbyterian Church, served as a greeter, deacon, and all-around handyman. Was a resident of New Bern, NC for 23 years and a was a member of New Bern First Presbyterian Church. For the past two months he was a resident of Fort Mill, SC. He held membership in the Rutherford Rotary Club and the Bergan Club.
His hobbies include, bowling, tennis, sailing and boating on Lake Hopatcong at the family lake house in Rockwood. He was in the Boy Scouts, Troop 131. Was an avid coin and stamp collector. He had sawdust in his veins, Lumberjack – never met a tree he didn't want to fall.
He is survived by his wife of 66 and a half years, Betsy Stryker Hillhouse, four children, Judith Barbara Hillhouse of Kiowa, CO, William Gysbert Hillhouse of Easton, PA, David Stryker Hillhouse of Fort Mill, SC, Jeffrey Cooper Hillhouse of Albemarle, NC, five grandchildren, Kevin, Megan, Emily, Sidney, and Rene.
An inurnment service will be planned at Hillside Cemetery in Lyndhurst, New Jersey in the family plot and will be announced by Holland Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation www.arborday.org.
