Gilbert Wayne Barnes October 15,1963-January 14, 2021 On Thursday Jan 14th , after a long 15 month battle with pancreatic cancer, Wayne Barnes, aged 57, has gone to be with our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. Wayne passed at home in the arms of his parents & surrounded by his loving family. Wayne is survived by his son, Hunter Wayne Barnes, who he loved & of whom he was so proud. He is also survived by his mother, Shirley Ann Mitchem, his father, Governor Redmond Barnes Jr(Barbara Barnes ) , 4 brothers, 2 sisters & a battery of family & friends that loved him. Wayne , a Native American of Lumbee descent was loved for his smile, his incredible kindness, sharp humor & determination & joy for life. He will be truly & sadly missed as he made all of our days brighter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, natural body building & being in the company of his family & friends. Only a few weeks before his death, Wayne bagged a 12 point deer. He then field dressed it & pulled it out of the woods by himself. He did not go gently… Wayne told all that helped him in his struggle that he loved them & was grateful for their unwavering support to the very end. Most of all, he wanted to extend heartfelt thanks to the Levine Cancer Institute for showing him love & kindness & for giving him many more days.
