Obituary

Tommy O'Neil Smith, 75, of Wesley Chapel, passed away September 17, 2022, with his family by his side. He was born September 15, 1947 to the late James Otis Smith, Sr. and Edna Estelle Smith.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00pm, on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at Holland Funeral Service. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:00am until 11:45am at Holland Funeral Service. Mr. Smith will be laid to rest with full military honors at Forest Lawn East Cemetery immediately following the conclusion of the service.

Tommy served his country as member of the US Army. He served in Vietnam from 1967-1968 in the 11th Armory Calvary Blackhorse Regiment. He proudly wore his Vietnam Veteran hat and was honored when his service was acknowledged.

Tommy married the love of his life Brenda Pearson on November 8, 1968. Together they raised two boys and enjoyed spending all their free time together. They traveled, went to yard sales, ate out with friends, went to Elvis concerts and were devoted grandparents. Tommy especially enjoyed driving Brenda around. When asked what he did all day he would say, "Driving Miss Daisy".

Tommy was a huge sports enthusiast. He played basketball, baseball, softball and golf. He was a passionate fan of the Carolina Tarheels basketball and The Atlanta Braves. Tommy worked for Hornets Nest Electrical Supply for 33 years and Scott, Health & Safety for 9 years. Upon retirement he would always say, "Please tell my wife I'm retired".

Tommy was a devoted husband, father, uncle and grandfather. He will be remembered for his love of his family, his kindness and generosity, and fondness for practical jokes.

Tommy was preceded in passing by his parents; son, Tommy Scott Smith and 12 siblings.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Brenda Pearson Smith, one son Michael Anthony Smith (Michelle Smith), Grandsons, Matthew Gil Smith, Caleb Oneil Smith of Monroe, Logan Oneil Smith of Wesley Chapel and granddaughter Gracie Gail Smith of Indian Trail, one brother Marvin Smith of Lincolnton and one sister Pat Avery of Gastonia.

Special thanks to his extended family whom Tommy considered his sisters. Diane Burrier, Joyce Wolfe, Ellen Gordan and Vickie Wright for their love and support and to his favorite daughter-in-law Michelle Smith.
