Obituary

Phillip Byron Isaacs (Phil) passed away on Friday, January 5, 2024, in Monroe, NC.

Phil was born November 23, 1955, in Elkin, NC, to the late William and Tommie (Snow) Isaacs. Phil was the youngest of five children. He spent the majority of his life in the Charlotte and Monroe, NC areas.

His sisters recall his childhood being one of loving the outdoors, playing in the woods, jumping over rocks, swinging on vines, and eventually winding up in the creek. He also loved visiting his grandparents in Surry County, NC where he learned to appreciate farming.

Phil started his working career in the HVAC business. Later he formed his own company, Carolina Seamless Gutters. He loved the independence that being a business owner provided and passed that love to his son, Jeremy, who started his own business, Southern Rain Gutter Co.

Phil's favorite hobby was vegetable gardening which he started at an early age, probably because he came from a long line of farmers. He was proud of his gardens and sharing his vegetables with family and friends. He frequently shared, "If you haven't eaten a potato that was just dug from the ground - you haven't eaten a potato."

Phil loved sports of all kinds, especially NASCAR, baseball, and football (Pro, College, Little League - didn't matter). He loved racing so much he built a racetrack behind his home, "Confederate Speedway", where he and his family and friends enjoyed racing methanol-powered go-karts.

Phil devoted a great deal of his life to coaching young men in all sports, starting at the Winterfield Booster Club in Charlotte then at the Monroe NC Recreation Center. Not only was he a great coach, but he was also a mentor to young people. He had several of those youth come back to him through the years thanking him for the fun they had being on his teams and for making a difference in their lives.

Family meant everything to Phi. He especially liked the big get-togethers - where good food and lots of love did abound. At these functions, Phil always orchestrated kickball, softball, basketball, and horseshoe games - for all ages.

Phil's happiest days were the birth of his son and subsequently his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved being a grandfather.

Phil loved exploring his Southern heritage. He was a proud member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He loved exploring libraries, graveyards and talking with his elders to learn about not only his heritage but also the proud heritage of the Confederacy.

Phil is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Julie (McCrorey) Isaacs, his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Caleb, Mary and Houston Isaacs and great-grandchildren, Byron, Wendell and Kenneth Jeremy. He is also survived by his sisters Barbara Broadway and Deborah Motto, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-laws (more like brothers), sisters-in-law and many friends who are like family - too many to name, but they all know who they are.

Phil is preceded in death by his son, Jeremy, his mother and father, his sister, Diane Sharpe and brother Keith Isaacs and many other family members and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Holland Funeral Service, 806 Circle Drive, Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
