Obituary

James "Calvin" Hartis gained his greatest reward on October 3, 2021 at 3:38 in the morning when God called his name while Brenda and Rheanna held his hands. Calvin was born January 5, 1951 to the late Harry Lee Hartis and Patricia Simpson Hartis. He was greeted at Heaven's gate by his brothers Jerry, Bob, Doug, his sister Ann and his best riding buddy Hunter. Calvin is survived by his wife of 32 years, Brenda Hinson Hartis, daughter Tamara Denise Hartis, daughter Rheanna Hartis-Shelton (Micah) and furever buddies Polly and Baby. Grandchildren include Crystal, Eric, Brittany, Madison, Dylan, Leeland, Jesse, Shauwna and great-grandchildren Eric Jr., Sophia and Baby Helms due April 2022. He was also loved by many nieces, nephews and their families. He retired from Union County Public Schools after 25 years of service where he met many lifelong friends. Calvin loved riding his Harley Davidson. He participated in many benefit rides for various charities. His mother said she had never seen him happier than when he bought his first Harley. He called himself a "Mean Man" when he was riding and he loved riding in God's country. He also loved Tarheel basketball and even though he was color-blind, he knew Carolina blue. He wore his Carolina sweatshirts while watching the games and proudly wore them on Sundays to church to brag on his team. He enjoyed going to the lake, coaching Rheanna in t-ball, coach pitch and softball, traveling to skating competitions with his daughter Denise, and Jeep rides on curvy mountain roads. During his declining health, Calvin never questioned God's purpose for his life. He never complained and accepted his health challenges with grace. He read his Bible daily and when he got where he could not hold the Bible or see to read, he made sure Brenda read to him. His love for God grew which he made evident in his love for others. He had a smile that covered his face for everyone he came in contact with, even during his hardest days. Calvin loved deeply from his heart! The family is forever grateful to Dr. Patil and the staff of Union Family Practice, Dr. Butler and the staff of Levine Cancer Center, Atrium Hospice of Union County, and Atrium-Union for the excellent care they provided. There will never be enough words of thanks for family, neighbors, pastors, coworkers and friends who kept us going during the last few years. We are forever grateful and love you all. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Multiply Community Church, 1819 Dickerson Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110 or Atrium Hospice of Union County, 700 West Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110. Holland Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family.
