Obituary

Gilbert Hall Efird Jr. (Buddy), 86, died on September 19, at Atrium Health Union Hospital in Monroe. He was born at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte on April 30, 1938 to Juanita Meares and Gilbert Hall Efird. Buddy was a descendent of John Query, a signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Buddy died of a rare type of cancer, dermatologic sarcoma of the head.

Buddy grew up in Monroe, attended the Monroe City schools and received his high school diploma in 1956 from Wingate Junior College. After high school Buddy was drafted in the US Army and served in Korea. Following his service he attended Wingate Junior College. Buddy joined his father in the family business, Efird Marble & Granite Works. In later years, he formed his own company, Efird Monuments.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, JoAnn Efird and his two son, Gilbert Hall Efird III, and Michael Jordan Efird. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Efird Kepley of Winston Salem, Juanita Efrid of Charlotte, stepson, Fred Motley III of Shelby, cousin, John E. Efrid Jr. of Monroe, three granddaughters, three great-grand grandchildren, and his beloved cat, Tina.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Buddy's two Gentiva Hospice nurses, Kelly Bednarik, and Lee Kiser for their devotion, love and exceptional care of Buddy. And to his dear friend, Patsy Witherspoon for her loving care.

There will be a private family graveside service on Saturday, October 26, followed by a visitation at 3:00pm in the Hospitality Room of Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Humane Society of Union County, 4015 Waxhaw Highway, Monroe, NC 28112.
