Obituary

Beloved husband and father, George Scott Heath, Jr., of Monroe, NC, left this earth on April 13, 2024. He was born in Charlotte, NC, on August 22, 1952 to Hilda Oleta Brewer Heath and George Scott Heath, Sr.

George spent much of his life in North Carolina with occasional longer term adventures in California and Florida, but always returned to his home state. He attended East Mecklenburg High School and studied music theory at Central Piedmont Community College. George was an avid musician and multi-instrumentalist who enjoyed playing the banjo, fiddle, guitar, bass, and piano. During his time raising his family in Carolina Beach, you could regularly find him playing at local spots, either solo or with his bluegrass band. Not only did he play, but he also taught and was the personal tutor to many music students, both young and old.

As a young man, George left North Carolina and ventured off to sunny Hollywood, CA, to pursue his dreams of being an actor and musician. A natural performer at heart, he enjoyed the fun and excitement that California had to offer but eventually grew homesick. With no funds to return home, he hitchhiked some 2,400 miles back to North Carolina with a new California wardrobe and a black cat he adopted along the way, Mr. Bojangles.

George turned his professional attention to construction and started his own business doing roofing and plumbing. A determined entrepreneur, he took great pride in his work with the motto "We do it right the first time!" He was a clever and technically savvy man who could repair most anything. George was an avid motorcycle aficionado and took great joy in riding and customizing Harley Davidsons, owning one of the first Shovelhead models off the factory line. His motorcycle dreams took a back seat when he became a father, but once all the kids were out of the house, he rekindled his love for the "scooter" and bought and restored his cherished electric blue '67 Electra Glide. Even in his advanced age, you could find him on the open road with the wind blowing through his surprisingly full salt and pepper hair.

George never did give up on being a performer. During his time living at the beach, he occasionally worked in the Wilmington filmmaking scene as a background actor and featured extra, most notably playing a knight defending his king from a time traveling carnival worker in Black Knight (2001) and a deputized hillbilly chasing down a trio of escaped convicts in Morgan's Ferry (2001).

At the center of all these unique accomplishments was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend. George was a man of many talents: an artist, an adventurer, a teacher, a craftsman. He loved to bake almond cookies and orange chiffon cakes for friends using his mother's (not so) secret recipes. His quick wit, hilarious stories, and bright smile made us cry tears of laughter and sparked joy in our hearts. His memory will be treasured forever.

George was preceded in death by his mother (Hilda Oleta Brewer Heath), father (George Scott Heath Sr.), brothers (Wesley Jackson Heath and Luther Brewer Heath), and nephews (Luther Justin Epps and Edmond Kyle Schlappic).

His survivors include his wife, Karen Long Heath, sons , George Scott Heath, III, and George Marshal Courtney, daughter, Erica Yvonne Courtney, brother, Joseph Crane Heath, sisters, Patricia Scott Heath Anderson and Hilda Sandara Coates, two nieces, seven nephews, and seven grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday April 17th at 2:30 pm at Calvary Baptist Church, 2518 Lancaster Hwy, Monroe, NC 28112.
