George Edward "Ed" Carney, Jr died on August 13th in Indian Trail, NC at age 73, after a prolonged, brave fight with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. Ed was a dedicated husband, father, brother and business man who will be missed by many. He was born in Chicago, IL in 1948 to the late George Edward Carney Sr. and Mary (McCaffery) Carney. The family soon moved to Purchase, NY and Ed graduated from White Plains High School. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Finance and Accounting from Lehigh University, where he was an active member of the track and field program. Running continued to be a big part of his life for many years. Following graduation Ed joined the National Guard and trained at Ft Jackson in Columbia, SC. After completing four years of service he accepted a position with Arthur Anderson in Boston, MA and then with US Shoe in Ellington, CT and was a resident of Connecticut for more than 30 years. In 1991 Ed and a business partner opened North Cove Outfitters in Old Saybrook, CT, a highly successful and award winning outdoor and apparel retail store. Ed mentored many store employees over the years who described him as "a friend, a gentleman, and a man who cared about each one of us". In 1994 he met the love of his life Margaret Anne McLaney. They were married a year later and on July 14, 1997 they welcomed George Edward Carney III (Ted).
Ed was an avid fan of every sport known to humankind. He was always happy to discuss sports and business topics. Ed loved watching his son Ted's ice hockey games, attending horse racing at Saratoga racetrack each August with friends and watching professional sports on television and in person. Beach vacations with family were very special to him. Ed was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Hartford, CT and truly loved his church family. He served in many volunteer roles including leadership committees and the finance team.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Margaret Anne, of Indian Trail, NC, his son Ted of Washington, DC and his sister Helen Walton Carney of Farmington, CT.
A celebration of Ed's life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, West Hartford, CT on October 16, 2021 at 1:00pm. A second celebration will be held in Charlotte, NC.
