David A. Wagner, 59, of Charlotte, NC left this life peacefully on Sunday, April 18, after courageously battling cancer and Covid. He was comforted to be in the company of his loved ones and to have received the unwavering support and prayers of family, friends and coworkers, especially his brother Paul, his constant companion during his battle for life.
David is now in the loving arms of his beloved mother Mary Ruth (Toner) Wagner who left us in 2015. Those left to cherish his memory are his father Richard L. Wagner of Homer, NY; siblings Kerry (Wagner) Ziegler and Jeff of Queensbury, NY, and Paul Wagner and former wife Diane of Charlotte, NC; uncles and aunts Russell Wagner of MS, Philip Toner and JoAnn of FL, Donald Toner, Jr. and Seyun of NY, Millicent Toner of VA, Ingrid Toner of SC, Donna Toner of NY; Kathy Fox of NY, and Phyllis DuRocher of NY; and numerous cousins.
David was an amazing uncle, and nothing gave him greater joy than to spoil his nieces Ellie & Grace Wagner and Emily & Lindsey Ziegler, and his nephew Jordan Ziegler. They are deeply saddened by his passing and will always cherish their adventures with Uncle Dave: mini golf, foosball, and card tournaments, trick-or-treating, car rides with the top down, and ice cream & candy runs to name a few. Uncle Dave will live on in their hearts forever.
David grew up in Homer, NY surrounded by family and friends, riding bikes, playing pickup sports at "the corner" and at "the field", and hanging out at Brigg's Pool. David was a math whiz, 3D puzzle genius, and there was not a sport stat he could not recite. He played football and wrestled, but he loved baseball and was proud of his accomplishments playing center field for his high school team. David played team handball on the post high school division team in the Empire State Games. He also played the trumpet. David attended Clarkson University before heading west in search of new scenery and adventures. David's travels eventually led him to Charlotte, NC where his Uncle Don & Aunt Yun welcomed him. He loved to spoil their two children Sarah & Patrick.
David worked in hotel management for Red Roof Inns specializing in turning under-performing properties around, and in construction before landing at The Home Depot in a career spanning 25+ years in Charlotte. David had a ready smile to greet customers, contractors and coworkers and he took great pride in his work ethic. He especially enjoyed running into people from the Homer area who had also moved south. David developed a passion for golf and after work and on weekends he would cruise over to a course in his Camaro to meet friends for a round.
Family meant everything to David, and he loved sharing holidays and special events with Paul and his family in Charlotte, visiting his father Richard and sister Kerry and family during his annual trip north, which most always included playing golf with his Dad, Uncle Don and brother-in-law Jeff. He always looked forward to attending GTM family reunions and was proud of his Toner Irish heritage and his Wagner Swiss heritage.
As per David's request there will be no services and he will be laid to rest during a private family memorial service in Homer, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory may be made to the charitable organization of your choice. Our heartfelt thanks go out to his doctors, nurses, and staff at Atrium Health and Hospice of Union County, and to Father Benjamin and Chaplain Ron who attended to David's spiritual needs.
