Obituary

Charles Steven Jehle, age 73, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2021. Steve was admitted to Atrium Union Hospital in Monroe, North Carolina on December 14, 2021 and placed in ICU with Covid-19. Three days later, he went to be with Our Father. We miss and love him deeply! Steve was born February 19, 1948, in Montgomery, Alabama, to James Roy Jehle and Jeanette Bush Jehle. He was a resident of Monroe, North Carolina. He graduated from Catholic High School in Montgomery, Alabama in 1966. After high school, he continued his education at Troy University (1966-1970) and Covenant College (1988 - 1990) where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Organizational Development. During his 39 year professional career, he worked various engineering and supervisory capacities at GTE, Alltel, and Windstream. Steve served as a member of the American Legion for 18 continuous years. When he wasn't found following his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide, his hobbies included hunting, fishing, golf, and billiards. His love and generosity was boundless! His love of friends was endless! His talents were abundant! Steve made wonderful friends and participated in multiple sports as he grew up. He is still remembered as a great athlete in high school where he lettered in football, basketball and track playing all four years in each sport. He was a playmaker who always recognized his teammates. His skills earned him many accolades. Steve is the only player at his high school to be named to the All American Basketball team. A banner was hung in his honor at his high school in recognition of his achievement. His highest accolade is the special man, brother, uncle and friend that he has been all his life. His heart was as big as the world! His big smile and easy down to earth manner was obvious to all and he didn't put on airs! Steve was preceded in death by his father James Roy Jehle, his mother Elizabeth Jeanette Jehle, and his brother James Roy Jehle, Jr. Steve is survived by his brother James Roy Jehle II and wife Sue of Marietta, Georgia, his sister Lynn Jehle Downes of Alpharetta, Georgia, and his brother Donald Patrick Jehle and wife Kae of Cashiers, North Carolina; his nieces Heather Jehle (Mark) McMahill of Westfield, New Jersey, Ashley Jehle (John) Loehrer of Alpharetta, Georgia, his nephews Greg (Kimberly) Downes of Cumming, Georgia, Jeff (Penny) Downes of Vestavia Hills, Alabama and Scott (Dawn) Downes of Chattanooga, Tennessee, his niece Dr. Kara Jehle (Rob) Pepper of Atlanta, Georgia, his nephew Patrick (Catherine) Jehle of Gulf Shores, Alabama; his great nieces and nephews Lila and Rowan McMahill, Henry, Charles, and Jane Loehrer, Lauren and Corey Downes, Chad Littleton, Sydney, Harrison, and Alexandra Downes, Brendan and Beckett Downes, Myles and Ian Pepper, Patrick and Chapman Jehle. Steve is survived by his aunt Peggy Murrell Jehle of Montgomery, Alabama; being born and raised in a large family in Montgomery, Alabama he is survived by numerous cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held at Holland Funeral Service in Monroe, North Carolina on January 5, 2022, 6:00-7:30. MASKS ARE REQUIRED. A private family burial will be held at St. Margaret's Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to the American Legion or to his Alma Mater, Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School, 5350 Vaughn Road, Montgomery, Alabama 36116
