Funeral Services will be held at 3:00pm on Friday, October 24, 2025, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 6907 Gus Eubanks Road, Monroe, NC 28112. Mr. Baker will be laid to rest in the church cemetery immediately following the service.
The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 2:00pm until 2:45pm.
Bill was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for over 53 years where he attended faithfully every Sunday. He was also a Gideon for over 8 years, where he enjoyed spreading the word of God. Bill cherished every moment he was able to spend camping, attending rodeos, baseball games, and especially tractor pulling with his beloved grandchildren. Bill was a proud veteran; he served during the Vietnam War as a helicopter mechanic. Upon being honorably discharged in 1970, he returned home to his wife, Helen and began a family. Later in his life he and his brother, Dennis, started Baker Brothers' Farm. The two of them worked on the farm until retiring and turning the farm over to his brother and nephews. After retiring, Bill could often be found carting his wife, Helen, around in their corvette. Bill had a passion for go-kart racing, raising halter horses, antique tractors and farming. Bill will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen Baker, daughter, Bridga Long (David); grandsons, Jay Long, Noah Long, and Tanner Long; brother, Dennis Baker (Karen), sister, Debbie Plyler (Robbie), and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill's Honor to the Council on Aging in Union County, 1401 Skyway Drive, Monroe, NC 28110 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, www.stjude.org/donate.
