Obituary

Albert Albien Chiemiego III (Bert) of Mint Hill, NC passed away Thursday, March 23rd, 2023 at Hospice of Union County in Monroe, NC.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Blair Road United Methodist Church, 9135 Blair Road in Mint Hill, NC. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.

He was born on July 27th,1941 in Raleigh, NC to the late Albert and Nancy Barbee Chiemiego. Raised in Wilmington, NC, Bert attended New Hanover High School and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Mathematics. He did post graduate work at NC State and NY University School of Continuing Education. In 1964 he joined the US Army and qualified for Officer Candidate School as well as Ranger School. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant in 1967.

In 1967 he married Ellen S. Gibbs of Statesville, NC, and they made their home on Staten Island, New York. Bert enjoyed a long and successful career with Crown Cork and Seal Container Corporation.

He was a very active member of his home church, Christ United Methodist Church, SI, where he developed lifelong friendships and served in many different ministries. He was especially loved by the children and youth as he led their groups for years.

When he moved to Mint Hill Bert joined Blair Road United Methodist Church where he continued his calling to help others. He also served in the Kairos Prison Ministry at Evans Correctional Institute in Bennettsville, SC. for a number of years.

Bert was passionate about so many facets of his life. He loved baseball, gardening, blues harmonica, church, cooking, wood working, traveling, and supporting his family and friends in many aspects of their lives.

He is survived by his sister Emily Anderson and her husband Bob of Matthews, NC, Ellen Gibbs of Staten Island, his nieces Lisa Faris and husband Don of Carolina Shores, NC, and Tracy Anderson of Tampa, Florida.

He dearly loved his great nephew Bobby Faris and wife Jessie of Clayton, NC, and his great niece, Gianna DeGrace of Tampa. He was predeceased by his beloved great niece Emily Faris and by Andrew Cruz, who was like a son to Bert for over 50 years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blair Road UM Church, 9135 Blair Road, Mint Hill, NC or the charity of one's choosing.
