Larry Thomas Mills, 82, of Monroe, North Carolina, passed away on June 24, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on June 7, 1944, in Hartsville, South Carolina, Larry lived a life defined by ambition, devotion to family, and an unwavering belief in the value of hard work and education.
After graduating from Pageland High School, Larry attended Clemson University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Textile Management. He went on to build a long and successful career in the textile industry before transitioning to financial planning, a profession he practiced with dedication until his retirement. Throughout his career, Larry encouraged all who knew him to work hard and reap the rewards of their efforts, a principle he embodied in everything he did.
Larry was a man of wide-ranging passions. An avid traveler, he fulfilled his lifelong goal of visiting all 50 states and explored destinations around the world. He was a devoted car aficionado who took great pleasure in buying, selling, and trading automobiles. He also enjoyed owning and operating cattle farms. Above all, Larry loved his family passionately and was known to proudly share their accomplishments with anyone who would listen.
Larry was deeply committed to his community, serving as a member of First Presbyterian Church, a Freemason, and former President of the Chamber of Commerce in Galax, Virginia. His faith was a steady source of strength and comfort throughout his life, and he rests now in the peace and grace of his Lord and Savior.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Sherrie Mills; his daughters, Angela M. Lewis, husband Andrew, Susan M. McMackin, husband Hunter, and Tammy M. McGee, husband Todd; and his son, Jason T. Mills, sister, Shirley Mills Threatt, husband, Randy, grandchildren Jordan Cox, wife, Sarah, Windsor Cox Panek, husband, Tyler, Madeline Cox, significant other, John Halstead, Reese McGee, wife, Karlye, Audra McGee, Drayton Lewis and Olivia Lewis as well as 5 precious great grandchildren; along with Sherrie’s children, Brantley Pace, wife, Kelly, and Caroline Propst, husband, Daniel; and Sherrie’s grandchildren, Logan Pace, and Emma Leigh Propst.
A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, North Carolina, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. A graveside service for the family will follow at Mt. Moriah Church in Marshville, North Carolina. Pallbearers will be his nephews Ashley Threatt and Chad Threatt; their sons Carter, Camden, and Colton; and grandsons Jordan Cox, Reese McGee, and Drayton Lewis.
