John Edward Black, 76, passed away on June 27, 2020. Born in New Albany, IN he was the son of the late John Tanner Black and Marjorie Lucille (Crumbo) Black. He graduated from Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville, IN and attended Indiana University Southeast.
John was a lifelong entrepreneur working in multiple industries from HVAC, commercial equipment sales to golf course management. He was a loving father, grandpa, brother and uncle. Besides his love for his family, John was known for his love of sports. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, loved Indiana University basketball, and any team playing the University of Kentucky.
John was passionate about giving back to his community and sharing his love of sports. While living in Roanoke Rapids, NC, he coached numerous championship Little League baseball teams, coached men's basketball teams and officiated high school football. John loved Indiana high school basketball and enjoyed volunteering at his Alma mater, Providence High School. He served by managing concessions, coaching freshman basketball and keeping the score book for men's basketball.
John loved all sports, but especially golf. He was a great golfer and combining his love of golf with his entrepreneurial spirit, he realized one of his dreams by managing his own 9-hole golf course in New Salisbury, IN for 11 years. He shared his love of the game by giving numerous golf lessons and being the home course for the local middle and high school golf teams. John also enjoyed being a youth mentor with the Big Brother/Big Sister organization.
He is survived by his daughter Susan Black Apple and husband Philip Apple; grandsons: William Taylor Apple and Owen Edward Apple; brother: Charles William Black (Cathy); sisters: Barbara Ann Striegel (Roger) and Betty Sue Fears (Terry); 6 nephews and 3 nieces.
A private family memorial services will be held in Monroe, NC. A celebration of life service will be planned in Indiana for a later date.
