Obituary

Joan Beers, 92, formerly of Airmont,�NY, passed peacefully in her sleep to join her husband and son on July 15, 2018. Joan was born in Suffern, NY and was a fourth generation Rocklander. She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Beers, her son, John J. Beers, her brother Dilworth Sherwood (Skip) and her devoted son-in-law, William L.Walker. Joan is survived by her daughter, Jennifer J. Walker, her beloved granddaughter, Rachel Marie Beers (her "Best Girl"), two nephews and four nieces.� Joan�graduated from Suffern High School and went on to attend both the Michigan School of Music and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. She was very talented and accomplished pianist. Joan�worked as a receptionist at Mademoiselle Magazine in NYC until her marriage 1948. While working at that magazine, she was approached to be a stand-in for the actress Jennifer Jones,but turned down the offer due to her pending marriage. She also met such notables as Truman Capote and Rita Smith, the sister of Carson McCullers while working there.� In the 1960s Joan and her husband, John, joined the Rockland Society of Friends. They were both Presbyterians prior to becoming lifelong Quakers.� Joan was fuent in French and traveled to France on two separate occasions. She was also a lifelong , avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction books and could often be found frequenting bookstores in Rockland County and Manhattan.� Joan did volunteer work for over 30 years including at the former Rockland State Hospital, Helen Hayes Hospital the former Haven which was a home for battered women and Headstart. In the 1990's, she received a Volunteer of the Year Award in Rockland County. Joan's family and friends knew her to be a kind, compassionate, intelligent, generous and talented woman.� In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the John Beers MgD Scholarship Fund at Rockland Community College, 145 College Rd.
